You might check a BMI calculator, see a result of 23.5, and be classified as “Normal” by WHO standards — yet a Korean or Japanese doctor would classify you as “Overweight.” This inconsistency reflects a genuine difference in how populations respond to the same body composition.

The Research Behind Asian BMI Standards

In 2000, the International Obesity Task Force and the WHO convened an expert consultation on BMI for Asian populations. Key findings:

  1. Higher body fat at same BMI: Asian adults carry more body fat per unit of BMI than European adults. A Chinese adult with BMI 25 may have a similar body fat percentage to a European adult with BMI 28.

  2. Abdominal fat risk: Asian populations accumulate fat disproportionately around the abdomen (visceral fat), which is more metabolically dangerous than subcutaneous fat elsewhere on the body.

  3. Disease risk onset: Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia occur at significantly lower BMI values in Asian populations.

What This Means in Practice

If you are of Korean or East Asian descent, the Asian BMI standard is more relevant to your health risk assessment than the WHO global standard. A BMI of 24 might read “Normal” in a Western context but “Overweight” by Korean standards — and the Korean standard is the more conservative, protective threshold.

BMI Is Still Just a Screening Tool

Neither standard replaces a comprehensive health assessment. Waist circumference (men: under 90cm; women: under 85cm for Korean guidelines) and blood markers (glucose, lipids, blood pressure) provide crucial context that BMI alone cannot.
